What is Sedation Dentistry?

To make you comfortable during your visit to Clifford Dental, we utilize a variety of sedatives, depending on the needs of the patient. These include sedation that is induced orally and intravenously, as well as nitrous oxide and anxiolytics like valium. While sedation is useful for a range of circumstances, it is particularly helpful if a patient suffers from anxiety or fear of the dentist.

You will be given oral medication approximately one hour before your appointment. The medicine puts you in a light state of sedation and allows you to sleep during your procedure. When you awaken, your dental work is done and you’ll be ready to go!

Please note that you will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment. Once you arrive, you will be provided a warm, quiet room with a blanket to rest. With sedation dentistry, complex treatments that often require six or more appointments can be completed in as little as one! All of this occurs while you are under the attentive eye of our expert staff who will ensure your safety.

Anxiolysis (Oral)

Anxiolysis utilizes a mild sedative and anti-anxiety drug, such as valium, which is taken an hour prior to your operation. It is not as strong as conscious oral sedation; therefore, it is recommended for those with mild to moderate anxiety. You will remain conscious during the procedure, but any tension and anxiety will melt away. What could’ve been a stressful ordeal is transformed into a fast, relaxing procedure.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide (commonly known as laughing gas) is the most widely utilized form of sedation in dentistry and is available to you at no additional charge. After inhaling the gas, you will be able to relax peacefully while your procedure is performed. This even allows you, in most cases, to complete all of your dental work in just one visit. Once the procedure is over, the effects of the gas will wear off fairly quickly, allowing you to drive home and return to your day with no after effects.

You will need a preliminary visit with your dentist to make sure that you are an eligible candidate for nitrous sedation. It is recommended to eat prior to receiving nitrous oxide. For further information, read our FAQs about sedation dentistry.
