Root Canal Therapy

Endodontics is the area of dentistry that deals with the nerves, or pulp, of your teeth.

Root canal therapy, often referred to as simply a root canal, is likely the most well-known endodontic procedure. It is required when the pulp of a tooth has become infected. Left untreated, an infected tooth in this manner can cause more serious issues that can result in loss of bone in the jaw.

In a root canal, the affected area will be numbed with local anesthetic before drilling down to the infected pulp. The tissue will be removed then the canal is sanitized before being filled with sealant. Usually, a crown is fit on top of the tooth because it can become brittle and break.

“Root canal” has been an intimidating term in the past, but recent advances in technology have rendered the procedure quicker, easier and less scary. If you have any questions about endodontics, call (405) 283-0321.

Retreatment of Root Canals

Most teeth that undergo root canal therapy will last a lifetime, but a very small percentage may fail to heal properly. Retreatment may be required if the original procedure was unsuccessful or if new problems arise with the tooth, such as a fracture or new decay. It is important to contact our office if you feel you may be having issues with a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy.

The procedure for retreatment for a root canal is almost identical to the initial treatment and we will keep you apprised of any changes.
