General Dental FAQ

  • How can I prevent gum disease and tooth decay?

The most important preventive measures against gum disease and tooth decay are brushing and flossing on a daily basis.

  • Why do I have sensitive teeth?

There is a range of potential causes for sensitive teeth. Cracks, decay, gum line recession and teeth grinding can be obvious causes. Recent dental procedures or overzealous brushing can also cause increase tooth sensitivity. There are numerous kinds of toothpaste and gels designed to specifically help with sensitive teeth, but if they are not having the desired effect it may be time to schedule an appointment with Clifford Dental.

  • What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis is a gum condition characterized by inflamed, painful or bleeding gums caused by bacteria in plaque along the gum line. At this stage, the condition is likely reversible through proper dental hygiene.

We recommend scheduling regular hygiene appointments, where we will be happy to show you good oral hygiene techniques to keep your gums gingivitis-free.

  • What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease can be described as an advanced form of gingivitis. On top of inflamed, painful or bleeding gums, symptoms may include:

    • Abscesses
    • Bad breath
    • Bone loss
    • Gum sensitivity
    • Pain in the teeth or gums
    • Recession of the gums
    • Tooth loss

If you suspect you may have periodontal disease, contact us immediately to schedule an appointment.

  • What is the difference between a white and silver filling?

Silver, or amalgam, fillings are made of metallic alloys. They’ve been around for more than a century and are still a strong restoration option, as their ability to expand and contract with temperature prevents bacteria from entering a restored tooth.

White fillings are composite fillings made of plastic or glass polymers and are applied as a resin, which then hardens into a filling. The main advantage of white fillings is that they are made to look and feel identical to an existing tooth.

  • What is tooth bonding?

Bonding is an easy, cost-efficient way to fix gaps, cracks, chips, discoloration and other defects in a tooth

  • What are dental crowns?

Crowns are tooth-shaped caps fitted over teeth and are required if a tooth is weakened, decayed beyond the help of filling or bonding, or has undergone root canal therapy. Patients may choose to receive crowns for aesthetic purposes.

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

  • Am I a candidate for sedation?

If you have anxiety or fear about going to the dentist, then you are a candidate for sedation dentistry. If you have a fear of pain, have had a traumatic dental experience in the past or the sounds and smells of a dental office make you nauseous, sedation can help you get over your anxiety.

Some people have physical reasons, such as a bad gag reflex or very sensitive teeth, which make them a candidate for sedation as well.

If you are not sure if you are a candidate, simply ask!

  • Will I be unconscious?

No, you will be in a deep state of relaxation during your treatment. You will still be able to breathe on your own and communicate, but you will not feel any pain or anxiety. You may not even remember your procedure afterward!

  • How long will I be sedated?

Sedation can last from about 2-6 hours, depending on the strength of sedative you are given and how long that your procedure takes.

  • Will I be monitored?

Yes, at all times during your sedation, a member of our staff will be with you. We also monitor your vital signs to make sure they remain at a normal level. Your safety is of the utmost importance to us.

  • Are there any long-term effects of sedation?

No, you will feel a little groggy and “out of it” after some forms of sedation, but a few hours later you will feel like yourself again. You will need to have someone drive you home from your appointment though.

  • What dental procedures can be performed under sedation?

Just about any dental procedure can be performed with sedation. Sedation is not for the procedure itself, but for the anxiety that accompanies it. Ask if sedation is available for a particular procedure.

  • How many appointments will I need to complete my dental work?

In most cases, it only takes two appointments.

The first appointment will be a consultation to check your medical history and make sure you are a candidate for sedation. The next appointment will be to perform the procedure itself. This can usually be done in one appointment but may require a follow-up visit.

  • Will my dental insurance cover sedation?

In most cases, sedition will not be covered by your insurance provider. We will review your insurance coverage and inform you if it is covered or not. If it is not covered, we will let you know the cost and, if necessary, can put together a financing plan.
